Shield gating builds definitely leave more room in the Warframe slot, but as @(NSW)warfare3376 has been pointing out, shield gating builds are also more delicate, as you need to hit certain breakpoints and adding mods for efficiency or shield capacity can mess up your build.Shield gating obviously allows more frames to tackle more content. It allows you to decide how you want to mod your frame. If there was no shield gate and you wanted to run a frame that doesn't have invis or DR you would have to mod every single one the same, health armor shields etc.
